Every year in August, cowboys and cowgirls, 18 years and younger compete in the Rowell Ranch Junior Rodeo. The Junior Rodeo events include Team Roping, Calf Roping, Breakaway Roping, Goat Tying, and Barrel Racing. The rough stock events include Calf Riding, Steer Riding, Saddle Bronc, Bareback and Bull Riding. Our rodeo is divided up into two class divisions; Jr. (ages 6-13) and Sr. (ages 14-18). We offer Pee-Wee events for children ages 1 thru 5, which include the Dummy Roping, Stick Horse Race, Boot Scramble and Goat Ribbon Race, and Jr/Jr events also known as Gymkhana.
The Rowell Ranch Jr. Rodeo Committee consist of a group of hard working volunteers who donate their time, labor and money to make the Jr. Rodeo the huge success it has been every year. The Committee's Presidents have been Terry Andrade (1977 to 1987), Bill Lytle (1988 to 2001), Mike Holinsworth (1996), Mike Couto (2002 to 2007), Bill Lytle (2008 & 2009), Chris Peterson (2010 to 2014), Rory Churchfield (2015-2016), and Nate Spickler (present)
Every year the Jr. Rodeo draws around 200 contestants and 500 entries from around the Bay Area and neighboring Central Valley.
In 2008 a scholarship awards program was established in which each years Senior All-around Boy & Girl is awarded a scholarship certificate. In order to redeem the certificate a recipient must be eighteen years old, be enrolled in some kind of educational program. College, Trade school, vocational courses, certified apprenticeship programs and military enlistment qualify. The primary goal of the Jr. Rodeo Committee is to pay back as much as possible to our young contestants.
In 2018 we are looking forward to producing our 55th annual Rowell Ranch Jr. Rodeo. Please come out and help cheer on our young contestants as they compete for money and prizes in a sport that is as old as our western history and culture.
